Project Description

Cotswolds Replacement Dwelling

We have been instructed by our private clients to design a substantial countryside home to replace an existing dwelling set within an idyllic village in the Cotswolds. The project seeks to create a refined family residence that responds sensitively to its rural context while significantly enhancing the quality, scale and longevity of the accommodation.

The emerging design draws influence from traditional Cotswold vernacular architecture, characterised by strong proportions, pitched roof forms and a clear hierarchy of volumes. The proposal takes cues from historic manor houses and large rural dwellings found throughout the area, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens to create a home that feels both timeless and of its place.

Considerable emphasis has been placed on the relationship between the building and its landscape setting. The layout is arranged to maximise long views across the surrounding countryside, with principal living spaces oriented to benefit from natural light throughout the day. The approach to the dwelling is deliberately understated, allowing the architecture to sit comfortably within the village grain rather than dominate it.

Materiality and detailing are being carefully developed to align with local planning expectations, including the use of natural stone, traditionally proportioned fenestration and articulated rooflines. These elements are balanced with modern construction methods and energy-efficient strategies to ensure the home meets contemporary standards of comfort and sustainability.

The project is currently at pre-application stage, with proposals submitted for initial review. We are awaiting feedback from the local planning authority to help shape the next phase of design development and ensure the scheme responds positively to both policy and local character.
